About this site:
To provide information about what is happening and then some.
School libraries are changing. Now, many libraries are calling "learning commons" or "media centers". Collections include databases, ebooks, streaming video, online periodicals and newspapers. Many librarians are responsible for webpages, audiovisual equipment including Smart Boards, projectors, iPads, and so much more. Even our library catalogues are changing.
Who is staffing the library is also changing. Budgets are slowly squeezing teacher-librarians out of their traditional spaces. Some schools are shrinking the hours the library is open or staffing the library with some combination of teacher librarians, library technicians, library clerks, secretaries, or even volunteers.
As a working librarian in the field, I feel it is vitally important that we show our communities exactly what value we are adding to our schools. We must celebrate our ability to collaborate with teachers to improve the learning of our students, advocate for literacy programs, and actively embrace a new vision of our role and our libraries' roles in the lives of our students and communities. Libraries are vital. Let's fight for that.
